Can the Wii play music CDs and DVDs?

I know that you can play Wii games andGamecube games on the Wii. I also heard that You could play music CDs and DVDs on the Wii as well because of the full CD sized slot. I bought a Wii on eBay and it Didn’t play music or movies. If it can, how do I go about doing it?
